Ben Deering

Retail, hospitality and sales & marketing. Photography & art initially kicked off my career in travel which shifted to full time travel & tourism through a mixture of retail, corporate and group booking roles. Previous to Mount Gambier, I was managing Australia’s largest wholesale travel department in Melbourne. I am currently the Community Manager for Flinders Uni’s Envision Limestone Coast incubator and a mobile digital Travel Agency, while sharing the views as Caretaker of our Centenary Tower.

Ben and his family have made the road trip too many times to count from Adelaide & Melbourne for the last decade. As a young family, they moved to Mount Gambier in 2017 and it’s now their permanent home.

The most fascinating blend of sinkholes, caves and craters on the edge of town with a great community.

There is an oversupply of natural beauty and geology you don’t find anywhere else. There are also plenty of ideas which mean little without us taking action. I tend to look at my glass as overflowing rather than half full, which makes this a very privileged position to grow our region. After years of helping grow best practice sending Aussies overseas, it’s nice to bring in others to show off our amazing backyard.

I am a hospitality girl. I have managed cafes, restaurants, bars, retail shops for over 20 years- all around Australia- in fact, all around the world. I was in my late 20s when I realised that working in hospitality can be a career and not just a stepping stone to somewhere else. Working in hospitality is hard work and only a certain kind of person can do it. My husband and I now own The Apple Farm which is a unique little venue, specialising in private functions and special events. I love the work that I do- I have always enjoyed my work and I have a passion for training and also for tourism.

I was born and bred in north Queensland, moving to the Sunshine Coast for my high school years and that’s where I call home now. In 2000 I started dating my {now} husband from Mount Gambier and made my first trip to SA in 2001. After starting a family and many family holidays to the Limestone Coast we made the decision to re-locate here in 2012.

At first my favourite thing about Mount Gambier was the cute little Limestone Cottages with rose gardens (something that a QLDer is not used to seeing at all). Then it was the geological history and natural wonders of the region. Now it’s the amazing locals and the community spirit. I’m a small town girl at heart, and I love being a part of this incredible community. I also have to mention that I love the seasons. Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. I don’t think I can pick a favourite.

There is a couple of reasons why I decided to join the board of Tourism Mount Gambier, but the main one really is because I believe in this region. One of my favourite things to do is play tour guide to my friends and family that come to visit. When the opportunity came along to join the board I thought about it and decided that it would be in my best interest to join, to learn and to contribute. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am passionate, enthusiastic and rather lively and I believe that I’ll be an asset to this board.
