Caroline Hills Open Garden
November 23, 2018 @ 10:00 am - November 25, 2018 @ 4:30 pm| $8 – $18
Caroline Hills is a large rambling country 3 acre garden divided into several areas by walls, plants or other structures. There is a focus on form, texture and perfume.
Shady trees frame beautiful vistas and from the extensive cool green lawns, paths wind through borders filled with violets, liliums, poppies, wisteria, echiums and other assorted perennials and bulbs. Box hedging adds formality to the plantings and a selection of shrubs, along with deciduous and native trees, has been planted to provide windbreaks and habitat for birds.
Mature trees include oaks, ash, Bull Bay magnolia, silver birches, ginkgo, sycamore, plane, maple and eucalypts.
The garden is full of surprises – there is a lily pond, a sunken circular garden, a patio with pizza oven and an outdoor fireplace, courtyard and tennis court. The cellar door in the converted dairy hosts art exhibitions, events and sales of Caroline Hills’ wines and garden produce.
With an emphasis on productivity, the vegetable, herb garden, hen house and greenhouse are a focus, as is the orchard with a range of fruit trees.
Around 1600 eucalypts, banksias and she-oaks have been planted to form a walkway from the garden to a permanent waterhole about a half-kilometre away. Extra activities: Wine tasting and sales; ‘Fibonacci in Nature’ Art Exhibition, garden produce and plants.
