Penola based crochet artist Trevor Smith completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education (now Deakin University), majoring in three dimensional studies, in the early 1980s.

His work in this exhibition The Taxidermist, brings together a body of work exploring animals, birds, sea creatures, animal dolls and other critters in a quirky take on the preservation and presentation of the natural world. Some appear lifelike, others not so, and the use of colourful embellishment and decoration are common themes.

Using predominantly pure wool yarn and basic crochet stitches, the supports of these sculptural and wall pieces incorporate various combinations of polystyrene, foam rubber, wire and foamcore.
