Is your Instagram lit up with mysterious glowing mushrooms hidden within the forest pines? Want to get in on the action but don’t know where to begin? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We will have you hunting for ghost mushrooms in no time.
Planning, planning, planning…
First things first, you need to know what you’re looking for, when to go and where to find them. Planning will make all the difference to your experience.
So what are these glowing mushrooms everyone has been talking about? The Ghost Mushroom (Omphalotus nidiformis) is a bioluminescent fungus that has a soft green glow at night. Found primarily in southern Australia, Ghost Mushooms grow on decaying plant material such as stumps left after pine tree harvest.
Ghost Mushrooms start to emerge during late autumn, with Ghost Mushroom Lane opening for the public during the months of May and June. Walking trails such as Fairy Tale Hollow, Fungi Hunter Alley, Ghostly Gully and the Neon Forest are outlined just off the lane to help visitors find their way.
Let someone else handle the hassle of timing and logistics by booking a tour. These guided tours are the key to seeing the mushrooms in their best light.
The forest guides from Forestry SA will help you get the most from your visit to Ghost Mushroom Lane. Take this opportunity to see the luminous fungi up close, in a safe and friendly environment. To book your Forestry SA tour, click here.
